What is it really like to be a plastic surgeon? Well, everyone thinks that you are rolling in money and that you are dating models and that you are driving Ferraris and that you go on vacation to one of your many homes.
I will give you an idea. I have one home. I have not taken a vacation in 10 years, and my life is basically consumed with dealing with patient-related issues. There is no dating. There is no time for family. You answer patient calls on nights and weekends. You answer thousands of patient emails a month. You fill out or dictate all of the patient charts with operative notes, preop notes and consults, and postoperative and follow up notes. You attend to your surgery center so that all equipment and supplies are up to date. There is no time for hobbies. You must allow for some exercise, eating, and sleeping, but this is to allow you to be as sharp and focused as possible for surgery and patient interaction. There is no off time. You must be on all the time.
Everything is done to perfection or as close to perfection as humans can achieve. You will have to deal with countless patients who will not adhere to postoperative advice and treatment protocols and then patients will blame you for their own issues created by them. It is very much a thankless job, but patients frequently indulge in writing less than flattering reviews that are totally contrived for an alternative purpose such as extortion of money, etc. Other plastic surgeons will continuously try to sabotage due to nothing more than jealousy.
